Make everything bigger: larger text, bolder icons, easier buttons
If you find yourself holding the phone at arm's length, or squinting at buttons that seem to have been made for much younger eyes, you are not doing anything wrong, and your eyes are not the problem. The phone simply arrived set to small, and almost nobody knows it can be changed. It can. In a few taps you can make the writing bigger, the icons bolder and the buttons easier to press, on your phone, your tablet and your computer alike. And here is the reassuring part to keep in mind through all of it: nothing here can break your device. These are just display settings, and every one of them can be turned straight back.
Nothing here can break the phone
Before we change a single thing, hold onto this, because it takes all the worry out of trying: you cannot break anything by making text bigger. Text size, icon size and contrast are display settings, and all they do is change how big and clear things look on the screen. They do not touch your photos, your messages, your contacts or anything else you have saved. If you make something too big and do not like it, you slide it straight back to where it was. So try freely. The worst that can happen is you nudge a slider back a step.
Larger text on iPhone and iPad
Apple makes this genuinely easy, and it is the same on an iPhone and an iPad. Open Settings, tap Display and Brightness, then tap Text Size, and drag the little slider to the right. The words on the screen grow as you drag, so you can watch it happen and stop wherever feels comfortable. There is no need to save or confirm; the change is already in place across your apps.
If you want the writing bigger than that slider allows, there is more room to go. In Settings, tap Accessibility, then Display and Text Size, and turn on Larger Text. That gives you a longer slider with much bigger sizes at the top end, for when you really want the words to stand up off the page. On the same screen you will also find Bold Text, which thickens every letter so it stands out more clearly, and it makes a surprising difference to how easy the screen is to read.
Bigger writing on Android phones
Android phones vary a little in their wording, but the setting is always there and always under Display. Open Settings, find Display, then look for Font size, and drag the slider to make the writing bigger. As with the iPhone, the change happens as you drag, so you can settle on the size that suits you.
Many Android phones have a second setting on the same screen called Display size, and this one is worth knowing about, because it makes the icons and buttons bigger too, not just the text. Turning both up together often gives the clearest result, with larger words sitting inside larger, easier buttons. If your phone has a Bold font or high contrast text option nearby, those help as well. It is all under Display, and every bit of it slides back the way it came.
Making the computer easier to read
The same comfort is waiting on your computer, and it enlarges everything at once, which is often exactly what you want. On a Windows computer, open Settings, then System, then Display, and look for Scale. Change it to a larger percentage, and the text, icons and buttons all grow together, right across the screen. It is the single most useful change most people make to a Windows computer, and it changes nothing about your files.
On a Mac, open System Settings, then click Displays, and choose one of the scaled options that shows Larger Text. Everything becomes more generous and easier to read. If you use a web browser a good deal, there is a lovely shortcut worth remembering on any computer: hold the Control key, or the Command key on a Mac, and press the plus key to zoom a page in. Each press makes that page a little bigger, and the minus key shrinks it back. It is a quick way to enlarge just the page you are reading.
Bolder icons and clearer contrast
Size is only half the story. Words can be large and still hard to read if they are faint and grey against a pale background, which a lot of screens are by default. That is where contrast helps, and it is one of the biggest improvements you can make. On an iPhone or iPad, look in Settings, then Accessibility, then Display and Text Size, for Increase Contrast, which darkens text and sharpens the edges of things. Android and both computers have similar high contrast settings tucked under their accessibility menus.
The other quiet win is brightness. A screen turned up a little brighter is far easier to read, especially in a well-lit room or near a window, and it costs nothing but a moment. Between larger text, bolder letters, stronger contrast and a brighter screen, most people find the device becomes genuinely pleasant to use again, rather than a daily squint.
Let us set it up so it just feels right
If you would rather not fiddle with sliders and menus yourself, this is one of the kindest and simplest things we set up, and it makes a real difference to daily life. We make the text and buttons a comfortable size, boost the contrast so the words stand out, and then check every app you use still looks right afterwards, because occasionally a word needs a small nudge to fit. After that, we show you how to adjust it yourself whenever you like. Get in touch and we will make your screen easy on the eyes, gently and at your pace. New to all this? Frequently asked questions
Can making the text bigger break my phone or computer?
No, nothing here can break your device. Text size, icon size and contrast are display settings, and all they change is how big and clear things look on the screen. They do not touch your photos, your messages or anything you have saved. Every one of these settings can be turned straight back if you do not like it, so you are free to try them and see.
How do I make the writing bigger on my iPhone or iPad?
Open Settings, tap Display and Brightness, then tap Text Size, and drag the slider to the right until the writing feels comfortable. If you want it even larger, go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Display and Text Size, and turn on Larger Text for bigger sizes still. The change happens straight away, and you can drag the slider back any time.
How do I make text bigger on an Android phone?
Open Settings and look for Display, then find Font size and drag the slider to make the writing bigger. Many Android phones also have a Display size setting on the same screen, which makes the icons and buttons bigger too. The wording varies a little between phones, but it is always under Display, and it can always be set back.
Can I make everything bigger on my Windows or Mac computer?
Yes. On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Display, and change the Scale to a larger percentage to enlarge text, icons and buttons together. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Displays, and choose a scaled option that shows Larger Text. Both change how big everything looks without changing your files, and both can be set back the same way.
What if bigger text makes some words run off the screen?
That happens sometimes when text is set very large, and it is not a fault. If a word is cut off, simply nudge the size down one step until everything fits comfortably, or turn the phone sideways to give the words more room. The aim is the largest size that still reads cleanly, so a small step back is perfectly normal and easy to do.
Can you set this up for me so it is comfortable and stays that way?
Yes, this is one of the kindest things we set up, and it makes a device far easier to live with. We make the text and buttons a comfortable size, boost the contrast so words stand out, and check every app still looks right afterwards. Then we show you how to nudge it yourself.
